One expert says that airlines will need that and a third bailout to survive the coronavirus pandemic as Congress continues to discuss the merits of a second stimulus package to support the economy.
Dr. Larry J. Sabato said Monday, "You'll need two more big stimulus packages." Sabato said the (third overall stimulus package) would have to be in the first half of 2021," after the initial CARES Act was passed in March and assuming the next package will arrive before the end of the year as it has been in talks for months. During the inaugural ASTA Corporate Travel Conclave, a virtual event which kicked off Monday for the first of three days, Sabato made his remarks. Sabato is the founder and director of the University of Virginia's Center for Politics. He is a best-selling author of the New York Times, a recipient of the Emmy Award and is regarded as one of the most respected political analysts in the world. Asked how the travel industry will respond to the presidency of Democrat Joseph Biden, the presumptive president-elect, after allegations of voter fraud, pending lawsuits by current President Donald Trump, Sabato said it all comes down to the economy. "Things are supposed to improve dramatically in mid-2021, from what I have been told by public health officials," he said. Every indication he has got points towards a Biden presidency, Sabato said. "It's going to finish with 306 (Electoral College) votes for Biden. In the majority of the vote, Biden would be well above 5 million,' Sabato said. "Everything that Trump says is ridiculous. No systematic fraud is taking place. The most hawkish election was this. A Republican observer and a Democratic observer had only switched ballots from one table to another. There's no business with apes, that's how an election happens. By the end of the year the next round of additional relief for the travel industry may arrive, but whether or not it will happen remains to be seen. Travel industry leaders expressed dissatisfaction when negotiations stalled back in October. As we are closer to the end of what has been a hectic year, one can only hope that, sooner than later, support is on the way.
